Fundación TECNALIA RESEARCH & INNOVATION (TECNALIA) is the largest private research, development and innovation group in Spain and one of the leading ones in Europe. It is an applied research centre of international excellence with strong links to the business world. TECNALIA promotes and develops domestic and international partnerships and projects in markets and technology with other centres and firms with proven leadership abilities, and takes part in excellence networks in its strategic areas. It has a staff of about 1,450 people with different backgrounds, 70% of them with high-qualified degrees and 17% with doctoral degrees. About 36% of the researchers are women. The organisation has shares in 35 New Technology-based firms.

The operating business model is based on business units of a sectoral nature, made up of multi-disciplinary teams which optimise the offer to different strategic sectors: Sustainable Development; Industry and Transport; Information and Communication Technology; Health; Innovation and Society are the fields in which TECNALIA operates.

TECNALIA has a very important participation in European Programmes (Framework Programme, CIP, LIFE, RFCS). In the 7th Framework Programme (2007-2013) TECNALIA is involved in 209 projects, being the co-ordinator of 46 of them. This provides a total return of 75 M€. With this, TECNALIA is the first organisation in Spain in terms of participation and return in FP7.

Through its international connections, TECNALIA participates actively in the decision-making centres for European R+D policies: Executive Committee of EARTO (European association bringing together the leading applied R+D companies and groups); EUROTECH, a select group of EARTO’s leading organisations; Steering Board of 6 European Technological Platforms and present on another 24. TECNALIA supports regions around the world by through its network of Innovation Centres. This network is in constant development and nowadays, there are full members, such as Sofia (Bulgaria), Montpellier (France), Pisa (Italy) Cairo (Egypt), Bogotá (Colombia), Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), as wekk as many others that started as local partners.

The Innovation Systems Unit is specialising in innovation policies and programmes as a key factor in regional development, as well as in the management of innovation as the decisive element in company competitiveness. The Ramp;Damp;I experience of the over 65 highly qualified people that make up the Innovation Systems Unit, together with the technological and market knowledge of the rest of TECNALIA, constitute the competitive edge of the high added value services it offers to the clients.Policies for innovation and models of regional development.
