JIIP Symposium "The future of sectoral innovation" - 19 April 2010

Even though the Icelandic volcano managed to bring European air travel to a complete standstill and to keep JIIP director Jos Leijten from returning from Asia in time, the JIIP Symposium on “The future of sectoral innovation” on 19 April 2010 in Brussels took place and can be considered a good success. Several speakers who could not be there in person were connected to the conference through VoIP, so the participants were not only able to see and listen to almost all the scheduled presentations but also to ask questions and engage in discussions with the respective speakers afterwards.

Innovation in Aerospace was one of the very topical issues debated in the first session, in which sector experts discussed and compared innovation in their respective industry. The second session focused on “lessons learned” and cross-cutting issues and included presentations by project managers and Commission representatives. All presentations are now available for download below, a written report will follow soon.

1. Michael Ploder (Automotive)2. Matti Kokkala (Construction)3. Gernot Klotz (Chemical Industry)4. Luis Rubalcaba (Services)5. Annelieke van der Giessen (Aerospace) - 6. José Maria Lazaro (Food)7. Michele Cincera (Corporate R&D) - 8. Govert Gijsbers (Future Jobs & Skills)9. Henriëtte van Eijl (Lead markets)10. Fernando Diaz Lopez (Eco-Innovation)11. Carlos Montalvo (SIW)

7th Asialics International Conference – 15-17 April 2010

With the aim to continue building good linkages with the Asian innovation policy research community JIIP Director Jos Leijten participated in Asialics 2010 held in Taipei. It was titled: Global Recession and Reform of Innovation Systems in Asia. He contributed with a paper which explores the shape of the next (growth) wave after the 2008-2009 crisis.

The two-day conference included many very interesting paper presentations and discussions directly or indirectly dealing with the topic of the conference. It was a pity that for unclear and by now rather exceptional reasons researchers from mainland China were discouraged to participate. Click here to read more.

1st European Innovation Summit - 13-14 October 2009

As a founding member of Knowledge4Innovation, JIIP had been actively involved in preparations for the 1st European Innovation Summit, which was held on 13 and 14 October 2009 in the European Parliament. The main goals of this event were to raise awareness of the need for a more innovative Europe and to explore what EU innovation policy needs to do in the upcoming years. Amongst many others, it featured the President of the European Commission Barroso and the President of the European Parliament Buzek as keynote speakers and was one of the largest events ever held in the European Parliament (read more).

JIIP Spring School - 23-25 April 2009

During the April 2009 JIIP Spring School, we discussed the issue of "Crisis and Innovation". Andreas Schibany of Joanneum Research addressed the problem already in mid 2008 (read his paper). Jos Leijten presented a first draft of a paper titeled "Crisis and recovery: shaping the next wave" (go to documents).

Other presentations and discussions were focused on recent project experiences, their future prospects and on a few more inmmeditate topics. The session was partly build on an earlier discussion of the outlook for innovation in different sectors of the economy. Preliminary results of work performed by the JIIP members involved in the INNOVA Sectoral Innovation Watch (e.g. in automotive, aeronautics and space, biotechnology and optical and electronic equipment) were compared with the outcomes of the earlier Systematic project . Sustainability and e co-innovation as a promising source for future innovation were discussed on the basis of experience gained in Austria , Finland and the Basque Country.

Another important topic was the future of foresight within the framework of the European Commission and the position and expertise of the JIIP members in forward looking activities.
